“Ron, why do you add ‘Exodus 14:13’ when you autograph your book, The Smart Stepfamily?”
I appreciate the question very much. Here's how I answered the person who emailed this question.
When I sign book I add this verse: "Moses answered the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the delivererance the Lord will bring you today'" (Exodus 14:13).
To understand the verse, you must look at the context. Moses and the Israelites found themselves trapped between the Red Sea and Pharoah's army. Even though they had just witnessed the hand of God at work in the 10 plagues, the Israelites now lost their faith. They even wanted to go back to Egypt. Trapped between a past they couldn't change and a Sea they couldn't cross, they decided that oppression and slavery was better than a future they couldn't fathom.
As my book describes, the journey to the Promised Land of stepfamily rewards is a long and difficult one. Stepfamilies must be willing hold God's hand as they cross their "Sea of Opposition" while the past quickly pursues them.
- As did Moses, I want to encourage stepfamilies saying "do not be afraid." Fear is what makes us stop trusting and give up.
- "Stand Firm." Waiting on God is difficult, especially when you are frustrated, stressed, and negative about the future. But waiting--in faith--is very important!
- "You will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today." God then provided a path through the Sea (of "Opposition") they didn't know existed. Stepfamilies must wait on God, trust Him to provide a path they can't see, and then step into it with determination and faith. Remember, there is a "Promised Land" for stepfamilies, but it's on the other side!
